At times we can find our dog's behaviour puzzling or troublesome, this can have a huge impact on our lives, the lives of the family and even society as a whole. A behavioural consultation will help you to understand your dog's behaviour and provide you with the information and practical skills and exercises to chnage behaviour. (See below for a list of common behaviour problems)

As an accredited behaviourist, the techniques Nick will use to change your dog's behaviour are based on a scientific understanding of animal behaviour while utilising positive reinforcement based training methods. Changing a dog's behaviour will take time, but we will work together to find the most practical way to fit this into your life and achieve the best possible outcome for you and your dog.

Depending on the issue, a Veterinary referral and or health check may be required prior to starting work together. This is to ensure that medical factors that could be affecting the problem are known and can be treated appropriately. It may be the case that the problem does not have a behavioural component and is entirely caused by medical reasons and therefore can be treated by your vet. We will happily liaise directly with your Vet to ensure they are kept informed and, where necessary, are part of the behaviour treatment and change process.

The initial consult with Nick will be approximately 2.5 hours in duration at your home, this time will be used to answer your questions, gather additional information if required and provide practical skills and exercises to help you and your dog.
1-Hour Follow-Up In-Person visit with Nick at your Home, or on a Walk (depending on the issue) (approx 4 - 6 weeks after the initial consult)

Nick works with a small number of clients at a time to ensure we can provide you with an excellent service. He is proud to be recognised for achieving positive outcomes for both pet and owner.

Too far away or no professional trainers nearby? Many behaviour problems can be worked on remotely using modern technology and so we are able to work with clients and accept referrals from veterinary practices nationwide.

Nick obviously has a wide knowledge of dogs and their behaviours and his training techniques are realistic, and can be easily incorporated into our life.
Nick doesn’t offer quick fixes - but long term solutions that make sense.

I contacted Nick when my 5 year old spaniel started showing signs of anxiety which led to reactivity around other dogs.
Wendy quickly booked me an appointment and explained the various options on offer.
On his first visit Nick spent 3 hours with us at home, getting a clear picture of the problem and getting to know our dog.
He followed up, very quickly, with a full report and a training plan for us to put into action straightaway. Everything was easy to understand and made perfect sense.
Even after a few days we could see a difference. By distracting our dog's attention away from other dogs and avoiding confrontational situations the anxiety lessened day by day.
We are now able to walk our dog without anxiety and he is making friends with other dogs at his own pace. Many of his problems were, of course, caused by us and through this process we feel we have learned to understand our dog and his needs so much better.
The whole Puppy Stars experience has been absolutely great for us and worth every penny.
On that subject, I was dreading the insurance claim which sounded difficult and time consuming. However, after I had filled in a simple form and sent it on to Wendy it was all sorted in days.
Such a good experience with absolute professionals in every way.

We have just completed some behavioural training with Nick for our adolescent dog and honestly, we cannot thank him enough. He instantly made us feel at ease and comfortable and no question was a stupid question. He genuinely just wanted to help us and our dog and build a better relationship which is exactly what he did. He didn’t just tell us what to do with our dog - he explained why he might be doing certain things or how he’s feeling which was really beneficial for us because I don’t think we would’ve known that beforehand and he has made such an improvement to our lives and our dog’s life. Nick helped us with our anxious golden retriever. Following fireworks night Hank developed severe fear related noise anxiety and progressively got worse with walking to the point of not wanting to leaving the house.
With Nicks help and advice we soon got Hank back outdoors and loving his walks again. It’s very much an ongoing concern but with some new methods from Nick we are helping Hank manage his fears to keep him happy on walks. Nick was so caring, attentive and really listened to our concerns I highly recommend speaking with Nick if you are having any similar experiences.

Been working with Nick for a few months with our 1 year old pup who struggles with mouthing/biting and couldn’t self regulate his emotions, meaning he was either very excited for very nervous. Nick helped us understand our dog more and put into place a few actions to help. Can’t thank and recommend Nick enough, he was clear to not just tell us what to do, but explain why and how. We had access to him at all times for any queries and questions and always had a prompt response. Hi Nick, I hope you are well. I thought I would give you a long overdue update on Willow. She is making good progress and continues to improve. She is much less reactive and more confident when walking. I would estimate that she shows no reaction to about 80% of dogs and if she does react it is often initiated by the other dog barking first. In addition her reactions are much less severe usually just a couple of barks and easily distracted. There are now quite a few ‘nose to nose’ friends and off lead she will mingle with other dogs. This morning we met 7 dogs and she didn’t react to any of them even though a dachshund barked at her. Thank you for your help, best wishes, Paul

I've had a very difficult time with a rescue dog who's extremely fearful and anxious. Hi Nick, I know we aren’t working with you anymore but wanted to give you a positive update on Roly. He is still with us and remains (and will be for the rest of his life) part of the family. He is improving day by day with his reactivity on lead and we can now enjoy lovely walks together. Still has the occasional growl if a dog comes out of nowhere. We don’t really see the resource guarding anymore but also don’t give him opportunities to rehearse this. He has developed a lovely relationship with the 7 year old who helps in his training. His recall is amazing for him. He’s now more accepting of seated guests, just worries when they get up and move about still. Just wanted to say thank you, as the trainer before had set us on completely the wrong path and clearly didn’t understand fear responses. You taught us so much and it all started to make sense. He will never be a social butterfly but neither are we.

I contacted Puppy Stars to help my dog with his anxiety and fears. One of his fears was that he was afraid to leave the safety of our driveway unless we were leaving in the car.
Nick was so knowledgeable and gave such good advice and tips. He created a detailed treatment plan for us to follow and gave us lots of information to help along the way. He was also available to answer questions anytime. 3 weeks after Nick's initial visit, our dog is now walking from the house, next to the road to our local walks.

I'm really happy with his progress. Of course, we are still using distractions and rewards out for walkies.
A few days ago a dog, off-lead, ran towards him and even though he was not happy that the dog was sniffing his tail, he didn't react at all.
Hopefully this will not happen very often, but it's a good thing that we managed to handle it without going into panic.
Other than that, he is amazing thanks to you and again, I'm really glad I found you.

Winnie (Update) I can't recommend Nick highly enough. Our two year old flatcoat, Winnie, had changed form a fun-loving, happy dog full of energy, to being terrified to go outside. Within days of an in depth zoom session , she was already improving. The follow up session in person was invaluable, building on the strategies and advice, tailoring them to Winnie and me and giving us both the reassurance and confidence to proceed. In less than three weeks Winnie was entirely back to her old self and we now have even more fun together than we did before. I first got to know Nick through puppy training and have more recently engaged him to help with fear/anxiety problems with our flatcoated retriever. I would highly recommend Nick in both capacities. He is very experienced and offers his guidance in a reassuring and enabling manner, applying his extensive general knowledge to the specific case with real perception, patience and observation. Full of really helpful tips and advice which then form a coherent plan, he instils confidence both in me and the dog. I had a 1 -1 one hour advice session over Zoom, regarding my concerns of reactiveness with my Puppy. Nick was very reassuring, had such a comprehensive knowledge of what would maybe work along with what I'd been doing or would maybe work better using something another way. Through Zoom he was able to see my dog in his own environment. Nick also gave advice on things we could do as an ongoing addition to the training we are already doing but not to blind the dog with so much traing commands at once and a few10 minute sessions through the day so not to confuse our pup, even if he was willing to learn, time and patience was the essence. So far so good when he's being walked, he walks to heel, when he sees one of his dog friends his 50 foot lead is extended with recall improving every time. We also hold him back to heel for a few minutes and chat to owner so giving our pup a chance to observe this person that's talking and laughing, and five days later pup has gone up to the owner and had a sniff around AND taken a treat from him. Then run off behind his dad again. But its progress in the right direction. Thanks again Nick for your time and the valued information you gave us, so we can work on our pup to turn his reactive behaviour around and show him that these funny talking beings with two legs are actually good people and he can trust in them too. If we were to need to, we would contact Nick for his services in the first instance because he is so good at what he does.

I work at a Veterinary Surgery and we often recommend Nick to our clients who have dogs with behavioural issues. So when I was fostering a highly fearful Romanian street dog, who was too scared to leave the house and who hated visitors and my husband (!), I contacted Nick for help. Over the phone Nick was able to offer me immediate solutions to help with her fear and aggression towards my husband. Later on we had a 1-1 session at my house, where after assessment and a long discussion he provided me with a plan of how to move forward in preparation for her to move on to her forever home.I am pleased to say the transition went well and her new owners have implemented many of Nicks suggestions, meaning she now lives in a house with two dogs and two cats, is able to go for walks and will accept strokes and treats from strangers!I can't thank Nick enough for helping a fearful aggressive rescue dog, whose life I believe was at risk, to go on to be living a happy and relatively normal life.
